Knitting on planes
Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 06:58AM I thought there was no way. For years, I have comforted myself with Sudoku as I frittered away endless hours in colorless airport waiting areas. I thought there was no way two sharp sticks would make it through security, and that if I tried I would be met with tazer guns and handcuffs, maybe a strip search. Of course, the worst part would be the confiscation of my knitting. All that work and fabulous fiber would be tossed away as illicit on board items. Last year when my office manager made my airline reservations for a conference in Denver, she accidently made the reservation in my maiden name. Never mind at this point I'd been married for 3 years during which she made countless reservations in my married name. I actually still had some documentation in my wallet under my maiden name (yea procrastination!) and apparently this happens on a semi-regular basis, so I was allowed on. Now I fly from Chattanooga, whose airport is roughly the size of my high school. This has it's disadvantages (like every flight either leaves at 6:00 am or 9:00 pm) but in this case it was an advantage. As all my belongings were emptied out of my purse and my carry-on and I was felt up from head to toe, there were only about 5 witnesses to these extra search pre-cautions for my special case. So you can understand why I never attempted such obvious contra-band as knitting needles. But then I read about the Yarnharlot's experiences. She flies way more than me and always brings her knitting with her. Well, I decided I could do that too. So this year as we flew from Chattanooga to Albuquerque, guess what I did?![]()
