Book Fast
Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 07:37AM My book stash is out of control--unlike the yarn stash which is (for a change) pleasantly in control. My selection of unread books has grown to the point I am starting to feel, well, inadequate. Clearly, I've been slacking off. My Mother-in-Law gave me The Tale of Edgar Sawtelle at Christmas. It's an Oprah book club selection which makes me wary, since most of her selections are like Lifetime television movies (some woman wronged by some man overcomes against semi-insurmountable odds usually played out in some highly improbable way). Plus it involves animals, and that usually ends badly for the animals. But she has promised it's good. Then there are the two books I also picked up at Christmas from the used book store (Merlin and The Origin of Satan) both of which I'm sure will be good. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and Goodnight Nobody were purchased....well I don't remember, but I'm sure it wasn't more than 8 months--surely. Then there are the two biographies, one for Teddy Roosevelt and one for Thomas Jefferson. And, oh dear, then there are the 4 books I bought off the Pulitzer list and the book a co-worker lent me back in September. It may be possible that I have an addiction to the smell of ink. What have I been doing? I see now that perhaps I have attained a level of cleanliness in my house that ought not to be. The stack of laundry is non existent. I'm caught up on all episodes of 30 Rock, Mythbusters, and Deadliest Catch. My priorities have clearly gotten out of whack, and it's time to put a stop to it. So I'm declaring a book fast. No more purchasing until a few have been read. I can manage what I have so long as it doesn't multiply. No perusing Amazon.com on my lunch hour. No swinging by the bookstore(s) on my way home. I'm barring the door to friends/co-workers/strangers bearing books. I can do this. I am strong. I'm just not going to think about the new Billie Letts book that has come out or the Janet Evanovich book due out any day....
