Growing On...

Busy season at work has started, so my posts may be a bit farther between.  But two exciting developments over the week—

1)     Most of my seeds have put in an appearance.  I must say I was surprised to see the broccoli put in a strong early showing.  The spinach didn’t show anything promising until yesterday.  I’m really hoping to stash some broccoli away this year as it is one of our favorite quick-fix green veggies.

2)     Also, my mushroom log came!  I ordered a shitake mushroom log from Parkseed.com a couple of weeks ago.  It is basically a rotting log, “seeded” with mushroom spores.  I’ve never grown (spored?) mushrooms before so this is an experiment.  The instructions were pretty simple.  Immerse the log in water for 2 hours to really saturate it. Then you cut the box and put a plastic bag over it to make a mini greenhouse.

Then just place it anywhere but in direct sunlight, and in a couple of weeks, you should have shitake mushrooms.  I’d scavenge mushrooms (we live near woods and get lots of rain) but all the warnings have pretty much put the fear of God in me.  I don’t even know anyone who knows anything about mushrooms to teach me.  So this seems to be a pretty good, nonlethal alternative.  And nonlethal is a good thing!   I noticed tonight--

On the right and bottom, baby shroomage!
